Putin’s envoy says talks with senior US interlocutors are “constructive”

(MENAFN) A senior representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin has characterized recent meetings in Miami with high-level US counterparts as “constructive,” suggesting that informal diplomatic channels aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict remain active and productive.

Kirill Dmitriev, serving as Putin’s special envoy, has been engaged in talks with senior American figures, including President Donald Trump’s special representative Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, according to people familiar with the matter.

The discussions are said to focus on a US-backed proposal that would involve Kiev ceding parts of the Donbass region still under its control, freezing current battle lines in Russia’s Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, adopting a neutral status, and downsizing its military. In return, Ukraine would reportedly be offered firm security assurances from Western states.

“The discussions are proceeding constructively. We will continue today, and will also continue tomorrow,” Dmitriev told journalists late Friday afternoon, declining to elaborate further.

Earlier on Saturday, Dmitriev accused certain media outlets and political actors of launching coordinated attacks designed to derail the negotiations. In a post on X, he praised Witkoff as a “great peacemaker,” arguing that criticism from what he called the “war lobby and fake media” tends to intensify whenever talks approach possible breakthroughs.

The Miami meetings come amid efforts by several European countries to gain a more direct role in the US-led diplomatic track. Following talks on security guarantees for Ukraine held in Berlin earlier in the week, senior representatives from Germany, France, and the UK reportedly traveled to Miami for parallel consultations linked to the same initiative.
