Russia Highlights Cultural Presence at Venice Biennale

(MENAFN) Russia is taking part in the Venice Biennale despite what its ambassador in Italy describes as external political pressure and restrictions linked to the European Union, according to remarks made by Russian diplomatic officials.

The Russian ambassador in Rome, Alexey Paramonov, stated that Russia’s participation in the international art exhibition demonstrates its intention to maintain cultural engagement and dialogue through art, even amid strained political relations. He framed the country’s presence as part of an effort to preserve communication based on cultural exchange rather than political confrontation.

He also criticized what he described as efforts to limit cultural and academic interaction between Russia and EU countries, arguing that such restrictions undermine long-standing artistic and intellectual ties. According to his comments, Russia’s participation in the exhibition has been reduced in scale due to current restrictions, with a shorter on-site presence and some content being made available digitally rather than in full physical display.

The ambassador pointed to the historical involvement of Russia in the Venice Biennale, noting that the country has participated since the early development of the event and has maintained a long-standing pavilion within the exhibition grounds. He suggested that continued participation reflects an effort to preserve cultural continuity despite current political tensions.

He further argued that many individuals in Italy continue to value cultural links with Russia and do not support efforts to sever artistic and educational exchanges. He also highlighted that participants in the Russian-led cultural project include young artists, thinkers, and performers from multiple countries, presenting it as an international initiative rather than a purely national one.

Overall, the statement frames Russia’s participation in the Biennale as part of a broader attempt to sustain cultural visibility and dialogue in Europe, even as political disagreements and sanctions continue to shape relations between Russia and EU institutions.
